I am a market leader in duties and other state taxes in Perth, Western Australia (WA), with 30 years' experience assisting clients.
I am a foundation member, and current Chair, of the Taxation Institute of Australia (TIA), WA branch, state taxes committee established to deal and assist with WA state tax issues raised by members and the TIA.
In the course of my practice, I regularly deal with senior members of various Revenue Authorities across Australia, including meetings with the current and former WA Commissioners.
I regularly draft or contribute to the drafting of submissions to the WA state Government and/or RevenueWA on various Bills and publications. The submissions have generally been made on behalf of the TIA as part of my role on the Committee referred to above. I have also contributed to submissions on behalf of the Law Society of WA and the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies.
Previous Roles
Prior to establishing Johanne Thomas Legal Pty Ltd, I was employed by the legal practice of a ‘big 4 accounting firm’ for 9 years. During this period, I was the sole dedicated state tax resource located in WA.
Prior to April 2016, I was employed for 20 years at Norton & Smailes, a boutique law firm located in Perth, which specialised in revenue laws.
Professional and Academic Qualifications
Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting Major) from Murdoch University, WA.
Admitted as a lawyer in WA and the High Court, Chartered Tax Adviser and former member of the TIA’s WA Education Committee.
